Tata Motors December sales dip 47 per cent

New Delhi, Jan 02, 2009 (Asia Pulse Data Source via COMTEX News Network) -- Automaker Tata Motors today reported a 47.11 per cent decline in its total sales during December last year at 25,219 units, as compared to 47,678 units the same month in 2007.

"A deepening recessionary trend in the economy, coupled with continuing credit squeeze and high interest rates, has further depressed customer sentiments. As a result, automobile purchases are being severely impacted," the company said in a statement.

The homegrown firm's total passenger vehicles sales stood at 9,838 units in the domestic market in December last year as against 14,316 units in the same month previous year, a decline of 31.28 per cent.

'Indica' reported sales of 6,749 units, down 28.9 per cent over December 2007, Tata Motors said.

'Indigo' family, however, recorded sales of 1,673 units, up 21 per cent over the same month previous year. 'Sumo' and 'Safari' accounted for sales of 1,416 units, a decline of 58.8 per cent compared with December 2007.

In the commercial vehicles segment, sales in December in the domestic market stood at 14,056 units compared with 28,661 units sold in the same month previous year, down 50.96 per cent.

LCV sales during the month were at 9,245 units, a decline of 29 per cent over the last year, while M&HCV sales stood at 4,811 units, down 69 per cent compared with December 2007.

Cumulative sales of passenger vehicles in the domestic market for the fiscal in the nine months were 1,39,084 units, down 7.97 per cent over the same period previous fiscal.

Commercial vehicles' cumulative sales in the domestic market for the fiscal were 1,95,179 units, a fall of 9.44 per cent over the previous financial year, the company said.
